Renting a gaming server
The structure of internet gaming network is made up of network of computers. Generally, the network comprises one or more
computers that act as servers. The computers on the players' desks are known as clients. The functions of the server
comprises of monitoring all the activities going on in the gaming network. During game play, the server tracks the
movements of all participants and lets movements made by one player during game play appear on other users' screens. The
servers can be set up in two ways. You could install and set up your own server or you can rent a server from a provider.
For some people wanting to set up gaming server, managing resources is a big challenge. For example, to run a gaming
server, you need a internet connection with a good speed. If you are considering getting more then 6 to 8 players on
the network, it is better that you have a dedicated line.
If you are planning to run a gaming server network from your home then you need to note that most homes ISP does not allow
any kind of server running on a customer's private home connection. Basically, if you run a server out of your home, you
are most likely going against your ISP policies. Also, a home ISP has certain maximum bandwidth limit which could also
limit your gaming network speed.
You will also need to install and setup server computers that may not be everyone’s cup of tea. On top of it, you need to
manage the equipment and the network also. Overall, if dragging in dedicated lines, building server computers, and
maintaining that equipment looks difficult then consider renting server space.
A number of companies allow you to set up game servers on their equipment, using their bandwidth. All you do is pay a
licensing fee. Most gaming server hosting provider companies have nearly unlimited bandwidth. They are not limited to the
maximum bandwidth provided by a personal ISP that is connected to your home. They probably will have more bandwidth
available than you would ever need. If you host a game server out of your house, you are likely to see very bad performance
due to the lack of bandwidth and also your connection will be saturated by about only 5 to 8 connecting players.
The downside of renting is a lack of control. Renters are limited in number of aspects. The rented game servers have
limited to number of the games and mods the server company hosts. Although the server hosting companies each host a lot of
games, you can not host just any game on a whim like you could with your own server. Also some companies have preset limits
on modifying the settings as needed. Also the hosting companies will limit the number of players that could join your
network. For major change you need to rely on provider’s rules and support.
Overall, it is up to you decide your resources limits and priorities and make decision as to rent a server or host own
server.
