Massively Multiplayer Games
While playing a multiplayer games one may think about the origin of this most popular concept in gaming world. Just playing
against an artificial and computer generated opponent is now past; this is an era of multiplayer games. Games like Quake
Arena and other FPS games have changed the way gaming used to be defined. MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Games) is the
new term that has evolved from multiplayer games. Thousands of players can play the game by logging in the related server
via internet.
MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Games) and MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) had an impact on the
current situation of gaming. The roots of these massively multiplayer games are believed to have stemmed from MUD,
Multi-User Dungeon and browser-based multiplayer games. Till this new concept, gamers around world were used to the concept
of purchasing a game and then paying monthly for a subscription to stay active player of the game. These games are placed
in a persistent game world, where the game play and game world itself are continuously evolving and changing. The game
servers are continuously updated by developer of games and gamers pay the price of this persistent world through additional
monthly fees.
The number of players in these games is in thousands and all these players can even communicate with each other during the
game. These games do not depend on any one or two players, games continue even if you stop playing in between. When you
join the game you can start regardless who else is playing at that time. The number of levels in these games are infinite
in other words these games have no specific end like other games which finishes once you complete particular task. The goal
of these games is not to reach for end but to beat other players. It is possible that you can play with your character in
game for many years (assuming that the game will survive in market longer), you improve your character’s skills, get new
items and grow stronger.
Good massive multiplayer games will be comprised of multiple servers for handling the different parts of the game world.
Each of these server will have more than thousands of client computers connected and it will provide a particular
environment of game. The set up of these servers will allow gamers from different part of the game to go in other
environment of game. A player can take on any part of the game through the communication between these servers.
As the multiplayer games grow, some players form a team against others by communicating. These teams are generally known
as clans in the popular multiplayer shooter games. Similarly in massively multiplayer RPG the formation of team by making
alliances and friends within the game is known as guilds. MMOG and MMORPG normally provide some kind of support for the
clans and guild formed in the games. Basically, the new trend has offered the world of gaming more competitive and
realistic touch.
